Comment: On Hipsters

The funniest thing about a hipster, is defining who IS a hipster. I don't think anyone really knows. Urban Dictionary defines it as "The blend of every failed fad since the early 1900s." THe closer that you get to an epicenter of hipsters (NYC, Austin, Portland, San Francisco), the finer the definition seems to become. I, personally think the world is a better place with hipsters, regardless of how annoying they may be. But then again, I don't really live amongst them. I do like to watch them, and I find the culture around them funny.

Ça c'est quoi ?

Urban dictionary.com defines a "Scene Queen" as:

"... typically a girl (or beckz or ryro aka same thing) who has accomplished one/all/most of the following:

- dated a guy in a band
- is in a band
- has their own clothing line
- does hair
- models
- does photography

etc. etc.

They are usually found crawling all over the internets on popular websites such as MySpace & LiveJournal.

I don't know what these girls do, these Audrey Kitchings, or Raquel Reeds, or Kiki Kanibals.

They seem to be primarily based in LA, have lifestyles bent towards aspirations of fame, and there's a A Look. Highly cosmetic with an emo bent, lithe and skinny, tattooed, copious amounts of eyeliner, with flat ironed hair colored in hues that only Mattel could manufacture...They all look like Fuzzbox (pre Big Bang)/Jem & the Holograms/Axl Rose/Muppet Show and they are all after my heart.

They all look f*cking batsh*t nuts, and I mean that is a very good way.

Comment: Hate Crimes Bill

I normally do not use this blog to make political statements, but wished to make an exception for what I feel is an important cause: battling modern day discrimination and hate.

Yesterday, President Obama signed into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which would effectively expand the federal definition of hate crimes to include those motivated by gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability. It also will allow federal authorities to pursue hate-crimes cases when local authorities are either unable or unwilling to do so.

Matthew Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998)

The point I hear often against this law: How can you make a violent act more punishable than just committing the actual crime itself? Isn't murder for money, or passion the same as one that is perpetrated out of hate? And if we do this, how do we define hate? How can we punish those for thought?

James Byrd (May 2, 1949 - June 7 1998)

It's a question that I would ask... isn't murder just murder? However, the killing of perceived inferiors and physical maiming based upon prejudice has been the foundation for acts from lynching to genocide... These are SOCIETAL values these laws are defining, and any thing shaping the dialogue to tolerate diversity, I will be behind.

For those that protest that we are encroaching upon people's freedoms, I say YES it is. But WHICH freedom do you support to be protected: the freedom to act upon held prejudices that denigrate personal liberty or the freedom to know that who you are is validated in this land of opportunity and freedom ? I will go with the latter.



I believe that we are setting societal standards with this law. And no, I still feel the government shouldn't have to legislate this, but the message needs to get through harder. Again, I feel we are shaping the dialogue of our nation to recognize when something is wrong, just as our predecessors shaped the language of this country to recognize equal rights for women, protection of children in labor, condemnation of racial segregation...I think it's easy to forget that in America's history, even these values were questioned.

Injury inflicted upon someone for who they are is the most personal violation of civil and individual liberties, something I feel slaps the face of individual freedom and the right to to simply be. Who you are should be no reason for someone to validate an attack upon you, or to decide it's time to take you out of this world.

I can't quite figure myself out on this one. On one hand I really really love those pants.. they remind me of Crystal Barbie when I was in 5th grade and anything that shines I have an inherent weakness for. Opalescence? Forget, I'm all over it. Of course, I want to try them on.. but, there's where reality kicks in.

The IDEA of the pants is amazing. I love the outfit.. but something... SOMETHING.. just seems off on it, and I have to pass...

Bad outfit for the camera-- the lighting, the pattern, all bad. I think I am in love too.

A couple of the blogs I regularly read are in love with this Phoebe Price-person. From what I understand, this woman has not built her fame by any discernible artistic, athletic or intellectual talent. Absolumente non. It was built by her own determination, sheer pluck and some truly awful outfits (...and some chicken cutlets.)

My fantasy is that she's a phD student at UCLA and her dissertation is a sociological experiment involving a methodical rise to pop culture fame. She would document in her dissertation the timeit took for her to be "discovered" and then revel to the world how you, too, can get your photo published next to those of Reese Witherspoon and Britney Spears. It would be brilliant.

However, the only thing I can surmise is that she's probably guilty of massive vanity and delusion, and that she looks, ahem, "interesting" in front of cameras.

This week, I read New York Mag's article about the double suicides of these two artists in love. It was a tale of love, paranoia, artistic frustration, and Scientology. I was moved enough to read some of Theresa Duncan's blog, (the post below is something I gleaned immediately from it) -- I found her affecting...

She created an animated short which was mentioned in the New York article. Iam hoping to find a clip of it to post. It was fragile, lovely and very rock and roll.

Always sad to hear stories like this.
