I recently began a habit of buying jewelry for myself as markers of life moments/obstacles/projects, etc.. My attitude towards jewelry is the same as some people may have towards tattoos.. it's very personal, and high quality is mandatory. Since beginning this behavior, new emotional doors have opened and jewelry has become much more emotional for me...and like a tattoo, I fully commit to pieces... so much that when a piece is lost, I have never been more distraught.

If you say "Green", the first thing I will think of is Birkenstocks (bad), recycling (good), patchouli (bad), and trust fund hippies (THE WORST) because Boulder ruined me. Before leaving the hairy arms of the town, I was DETERMINED to be as bad as I could ..drive to my mailbox, eat a steak a day, become a traditional animator... how terrible was the Flatirons experience to turn a girl who began the environmental club at her high school into a borderline Sarah Palin-type?

Bad.

Because extremism of any sort will turn most sane people off. And while "being Green" is indeed hip these day, it's not the first thing I think of when you think "sexy."

Until now. While visiting Eccoterre, today's posting featured Daisy & Elizabeth lingerie - eco-conscious sexiness. The line was begun by Daisy Hartmann and Elizabeth NeSmith, students at FIT, and features beautifully racy pieces constructed from organic and recycled materials.

The ladies are also seeking assistance via Kickstarter-- they have a show to put on, and it's got a $15,000 price tag on it. When I last checked, they were around $3,300 with 4 days to go. We need to help these girls connect with the trust fund hippies in Boulder, and EVERYBODY (the planet, the designers, the hippies and even YOU & I) WILL WIN.

Modern Vintage-- oxymoronic, sure.. but makes perfect sense when you see Steve Thomas' work. Steve is the boy I WISHED had grown up next door to me instead of the passel of snot-nosed, smelly, loud rascals who would hold cannibal grasshopper contests and throw game controllers at the wall when they lost their 54th try at Cosmic Ark. We'd hang out and draw, he Transformers and Inhumanoids, and I would sketch out things for She-Ra and Shirt Tales... and it would look cool.. and we would get married.. and we'd have children who would create amazing works of art...

All until the next water balloon was hurled at me.

However, there are a few people who will call it out that crap, raise the bar, refusing to suffer idiots or mediocrity (unless it is ironically funny). The Denver Egotist will become one of your daily stops for new ideas, inspiration and encouragement. Christian David Moore is a self taught, London based illustrator (SO much great illustration coming out of the UK these days....) who loves Tom Ford, Miles Davis and has a wicked, yet very delicate hand.

This video has more hair flips than a Pantene commercial, but my GOODNESS they were one of the most engaging bands during the 90's. Truly, they were... just a year or two before the entire grunge movement steamrollered everything in rock media...They lost Daniel and gained a new member whose name eludes me, and went sort of hippy dippy for the second album, which turned out to be a pretty solid collection of work...I loved Bend.

Gah, my silly artist's eye has to comment: It didn't hurt that the entire band was very photogenic. You have to love the boys from the West in the 90's. Topper Rimel's hair flips are The Best. I wonder what they are up to now?

The funniest thing about a hipster, is defining who IS a hipster. I don't think anyone really knows. Urban Dictionary defines it as "The blend of every failed fad since the early 1900s." THe closer that you get to an epicenter of hipsters (NYC, Austin, Portland, San Francisco), the finer the definition seems to become. I, personally think the world is a better place with hipsters, regardless of how annoying they may be. But then again, I don't really live amongst them. I do like to watch them, and I find the culture around them funny.

There has always been a part of me that admired the simplicity of line drawings. I can't remember how I stumbled upon Rinee Shah's portfolio, but I am glad that I did.

She is not an animator in the sense of someone who illustrates movement convincingly-- it is more in the tone and atmosphere that is created: unusual, sparse, emotional,and powerful.

My father and I were strolling through Central Park, when we heard them playing. My father being a musician, naturally took off towards the source of the song. After we climbed a rock, here were two lads ( I never use this word, but when you see them, you'll see how it fits) strumming their guitars, singing their hearts out.

Dad requested "Michelle" by the Beatles, they enthusiastically complied and I was smitten and filled with joy. That's what they do -- radiate joy. I was joy-smitten. I hope you are joy-smitten with them too!

Laughed at the "looky looky, she Walkin' Fortune Cookie"... I really liked these two! I love how the lead puts the microphone in front of her violin playing sister,and the sister sort of goes along with it. They look fabulous and her hair is wonderful.

Urban dictionary.com defines a "Scene Queen" as:

I normally do not use this blog to make political statements, but wished to make an exception for what I feel is an important cause: battling modern day discrimination and hate.

Yesterday, President Obama signed into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which would effectively expand the federal definition of hate crimes to include those motivated by gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability. It also will allow federal authorities to pursue hate-crimes cases when local authorities are either unable or unwilling to do so.

Matthew Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998)

The point I hear often against this law: How can you make a violent act more punishable than just committing the actual crime itself? Isn't murder for money, or passion the same as one that is perpetrated out of hate? And if we do this, how do we define hate? How can we punish those for thought?

James Byrd (May 2, 1949 - June 7 1998)

It's a question that I would ask... isn't murder just murder? However, the killing of perceived inferiors and physical maiming based upon prejudice has been the foundation for acts from lynching to genocide... These are SOCIETAL values these laws are defining, and any thing shaping the dialogue to tolerate diversity, I will be behind.

For those that protest that we are encroaching upon people's freedoms, I say YES it is. But WHICH freedom do you support to be protected: the freedom to act upon held prejudices that denigrate personal liberty or the freedom to know that who you are is validated in this land of opportunity and freedom ? I will go with the latter.

I believe that we are setting societal standards with this law. And no, I still feel the government shouldn't have to legislate this, but the message needs to get through harder. Again, I feel we are shaping the dialogue of our nation to recognize when something is wrong, just as our predecessors shaped the language of this country to recognize equal rights for women, protection of children in labor, condemnation of racial segregation...I think it's easy to forget that in America's history, even these values were questioned.

Injury inflicted upon someone for who they are is the most personal violation of civil and individual liberties, something I feel slaps the face of individual freedom and the right to to simply be. Who you are should be no reason for someone to validate an attack upon you, or to decide it's time to take you out of this world.
